It doesn’t take long for your body to start recovering and healing itself from the massive damage inflicted upon it by cigarettes and tobacco   The healing starts almost immediately.  As a result of quitting the healing will start from 20 minutes after quitting to 15 years after.  It is a long journey to cleanse your body from all the toxins and chemicals that you have inhaled inside yourself.

So lets have a look at the healing timeline

After 20 minutes.: First of all your heart rate will drop to a normal rate

After 12 hours. The level of CO (carbon monoxide) in your blood drops to normal

After 2 to 3 weeks. You will notice improvement in your lung functions.

After 2 to 3 weeks. In addition the risk that you get a heart attack start to decrease.

After 1 to 9 months. Your breathing will improve and also will your coughing decrease.

After 1 year. The added risk of having a coronary heart disease has decreased by half that of a smoker.

After 5 to 15 years. The risk of mouth, throat and/or esophagus cancers is almost half that of a smoker.

After 5 to 15 years. As a result of quitting the risk of having a stroke is now also the same as that of a non-smoker.

After 10 years.  As a consequence of quitting, the risk of getting cervical cancer decreases.

After 10 years. The risk of getting larynx, kidney or pancreas cancer decreases.

After 10 years.  The risk of getting bladder cancer has decreased to half that of a smoker.

After 10 years. The risk of lung cancer death has decreased to half that of a smoker.

After 15 years. Most of all you have the same risk of having a coronary heart disease as that of a non-smoker.
